First Odia Newspaper Utkal Deepika re-launched after 80 years

First copy of Utkal Deepika, now started as an weekly Newspaper. It was re-launched yesterday from Bhubaneswar after 80 years of shut down.

The Newly Launched paper has exactly the same Mast head like that of the Old Utkal Deepika.

Utkal Deepika, the first Odia Newspaper started its publication on August 4, 1866 and continued up to 1936.

It played a major role in bringing all the Odia-speaking areas under one administration, development of Odia language and literature and protection of Odia interests.

Gourishankar Ray the father of the co-operative movements as well as printing & publishing crafts in Odisha.

He founded the Cuttack Printing Company and Edited Utkal Deepika, the first Oriya newspaper to be printed as a weekly in 1866.
