ISKCON is going to construct a majestic Jagannath Temple in Puri at Baliapanda. This Jagannath temple will be constructed in an area of 18 acres with main temple plinth of 52000 sq ft. surprisingly; it has been designed to be more in height than the present temple. ISKCON has submitted its DPR to State Government and PKDA.

The BJP state unit has opposed the decision of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) to set up a “Jagannath temple” in Puri.

“No Odia can tolerate the construction of another Jagannath temple by any organisation in the holy town of Puri. The Pilgrim Town is the abode of Lord Jagannath. No scripture allows a second Jagannath temple in the town,” senior BJP leader Bijoy Mohapatra said.

Our temple is called “Bada Deula”, deity is called “Bada Thakura” and the path in which deity moves in rath is called “Bada Danda”. No temple or deity can be taller or bigger than the existing ones. Attempt by ISKCON to construct another Jagannath temple at Puri is inauspicious and may have disastrous effect on our state, Said Mr. Mohapatra

The present temple of Jagannath Puri is one of the four holy “Dhamas” and is visited by thousands of hindus daily. Religious sentiment of all Odias is attached to this temple since generations. Centuries old documents including Madala Panji indicate that no alternate Jagannath temple can be constructed at Puri. No such precedence is there during the last 500 years.
