Dutee Chand from Odisha qualified for the Rio Olympics, another Odia sprinter Srabani Nanda has booked her berth for the Rio Olympics in the women’s 200 meters category.
20-year-old Dutee clocked 11.30 seconds in the women’s 100m heats and then ran an even better 11.24 seconds in the finals to win a silver medal in the Kazakhstan Meet too book the Rio Olympics ticket. She is the first athlete from Odisha to have qualified for Olympics in an individual event.
Srabani clocked 23.07 seconds in the 200-meter race at the G Kosanov Memorial Meet in Almaty, Kazakhstan to secure her Olympics berth. The qualifying mark for Rio event was set at 23.20 seconds.
The 24-year old athlete from Phulbani in tribal-dominated Kandhamal district said she would practice hard to win a medal at the Rio Olympics starting this August.
The state government announced cash award of Rs 1 lakh for Srabani. The Odisha Olympic Association and Odisha Athletic Association also announced Rs 50,000 each for the promising sprinter.
