Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath and His siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra atop Raths in Puri would be conducted today.
The deities would put on different gold ornaments weighing quintals of yellow metal. Devotees can have the ‘Darshan’ of the Lords between 5 pm and 11 am tonight.
According to researchers, the Suna Besha was first conducted in 1460 during the reign of Kapilendra Deb. King Kapilendra had brought gold and diamonds on the backs of as many as 16 elephants from the south India after invading it that year. Advised by the then Kula Guru and senior priests, Kapilendra Deb engaged expert Banias (ornament makers) and made 13 kinds of ornaments.
